No one is made of iron, right? There are certain moments when our mind is saturated with so much information. But, we always have a heavy conscience because we are not studying. So, don’t worry, I’ve separated the types of films and series that I like to watch to relax and continue feeling productive.
# series/movie: Breaking Bad
First of all, who has never heard that question?
So… Do you know how to make drugs? hahaha.
Every Chemical Engineering student has heard this question.
A series that portrays drug production well is the Breaking Bad series.
In this plot, Walter White is a chemistry teacher at a school in New Mexico. In turn, the professor lives in a situation with a lot of debt, his wife is pregnant and his son also suffers from cerebral palsy.
In the meantime, Walter is diagnosed with lung cancer.
In view of this, he, expecting his death to come, aims to use his last days of life to promote a dignified life for his family.
In this sense, not satisfied with his remuneration as a teacher, and, knowing that this salary would not fulfill his purpose, Walter (introducing himself as Heisenberg) begins its production of Methamphetamine to be sold.
# series: Sherlock Holmes
Elementary my dear Watson
Now, this series is about a detective who uses chemistry to solve crimes that have been happening.
Although the series is treated as an investigative series, the detective uses chemical substances to perform the analysis of fingerprint, ballistics and tracking samples such as shoe and tire marks.
Above all, forensic sciences are one of the aspects of Chemical Engineering, in which the professional can work as an expert.
# série: Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)
Much of the drama takes place in a forensics laboratory where the protagonists represent the day-to-day life of a Criminal Expert.
In this series, we see the use of different reagents and solvents to solve different crimes.
The Chemical Engineer has the capacity to work in this area. How to do it?
Normally, in Brazil, we can become a CSI through competitions for the Federal and Civil Police.
However, the area of expertise is not just criminal, we also have, for example, the area of environmental and judicial expertise.
# film: A talented woman
In this film, Julia Roberts works in a law firm and is faced with the spread of diseases in the city due to water contamination due to the disposal of waste from a chemical industry without pre-treatment.
This contamination came from the dumping of Chromium (VI). After all, this is a carcinogenic metal.
Similarly, let’s talk not just about entertainment, but about history. Facts that marked humanity and were recorded in the form of documentaries.
# movies: Marie Curie (2004)
This film tells the story of the extraordinary scientist Marie Curie.
Beforehand, she was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize, better yet, two prizes and in different areas.
The first was the Nobel Prize for Physics due to his research into the phenomenology of radiation.
On the other hand, the second was in the area of Chemistry, due to the discovery of two chemical elements, radium, the isolation of radium and the study of the nature and compounds of this element.
Finally, his death came, due to excessive exposure to radioactivity.
Likewise, the film also explores Marie’s life and contribution to the First World War.
Several other biographical records were made. See!
For example, Marie Curie was the subject of several biographical films:
Madame Curie, based on her life (1943 Oscar nominee)
Les Palmes de M. Schutz (1997)
Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge (2016)
Radioactive (2019).
# Documentary: Cesium 137 – Goiânia’s nightmare
It’s difficult not to remember and not know about this story that marked the lives of many Brazilians. This documentary/film portrays the radioactive accident with a cesium capsule that occurred in Goiânia in 1987.
Before we had digested what had happened in Chernobyl, this accident happened.
In an abandoned radiology institute, a cesium capsule had been left. In the meantime, in search of scrap, paper collectors found the material and took it home. The rupture of the apparently armored casing caused a large part of the city’s population to be exposed to the isotope, resulting in several genetic changes and even death.
# Documentary: The Chernobyl Disaster
This documentary portrays the accident that occurred at a nuclear power plant in Russia in 1986.
Now, the accident, the result of a reactor explosion, was caused by human error due to non-compliance with safety protocols.
The material contained in the reactor was Uranium-235. In short, this radioactive material was spread by the action of the wind.
As a result, the return of human habitation in the region would take at least 20 thousand years, according to estimates bysome scientists.
Conclusion
In short, let’s relax and keep learning. The indications are the ones that I identified with the most. In other words, I make a point of watching it again whenever I can.
However, other films and series show the activities carried out by engineers and the characteristics that the market expects from engineers in general.
Whether it’s a film, series or documentary, the important thing is to always learn.
